Printing

Introduction

Shipping labels generated through Smart Send can be printed on all printers. See below how to set up printing on a normal A4 printer or a label printer such as the Zebra GK420d or the newer Zebra ZD420d and ZD421d models.

{info} Smart Send recommends using shipping labels of the size 102x192mm, as these can be used for both PostNord, GLS, Bring, DAO and more. If only GLS is used, labels of the size 100mm x 150mm can also be used.

Download sample labels below to test on your own printer:

Please see the guide suitable for your printer setup:

{warning} Please note the interface when printing from a desktop application like Adobe Acrobat Reader or Preview is different from when printing from your browser.

Buying printer and shipping labels

We highly recommend to use a dedicated label printer as this will save you a lot of time and money. We suggest buying a Zebra ZD421d with either Ethernet or Wifi connection, so you can print from multiple computer if that should become a requirement.

Printing paper can be bought from many different suppliers. We usually recommend buying labels in the size 102x192mm as they will fit most carrier, but in situations where you are solely using a carrier which provides small labels, then consider using a differnt size.

  • Multiple carriers: 102x192mm recommended as it will work for all carriers
  • PostNord: 102x192mm
  • GLS: 100x150mm
  • DAO: 100x150mm
  • Bring: 100x150mm

Label printer

When printing on a label printer then the only thing to be aware of is configuring the correct paper size in the printer settings. The paper size should be set to 102x192mm or 100x150mm depending on the paper you are using - see how to choose printing paper size here.

Mac

The Zebra label printers GK420d, ZD420d, ZD421d and similar models are installed on a Mac like any other printer. But please note that it is important to select the Zebra ZPL Label Printer printer driver.

Once the printer is installed then the correct paper size must be setup like so:

  1. Open one of the test labels from the top of this page in the app Preview
  2. Select Print
  3. Under Paper Size select Manage Custom Sizes...
  4. Press +
  5. Specify the custom paper size as follows:
    • Width: 102mm
    • Height: 192mm
    • Non-Printable Area: User defined
    • Top: 0 mm
    • Right: 0 mm
    • Bottom: 0 mm
    • Left: 0 mm
  6. Double-click the paper size to rename it to 102x192mm

Once the printer is configured, then simply select that printer when printing shipping labels and they should print correctly.

Windows

All Zebra label printers, like GK420d, ZD420d, ZD421d and similar models, must be installed on Windows via the Zebra Setup Utilities. The setup process will prompt for the paper size which should be set to 102x192mm or 100x150mm depending on the paper you are using - see how to choose printing paper size here.

Once the printer is configured, then simply select that printer when printing shipping labels and they should print correctly.

A4 Printing

In order to print a label on A4 then chose to print 2 pages per sheet and set the scale to 150%. The print will look like this:

{info} If you add/install a copy of your A4 printer and configure the default settings of the printer to be 2 pages per sheet (see examples below) then you won't need to set these values on every print
